Hot off the press is a news release from Tommy John announcing their new Air Underwear and Undershirt line.
New York, NY. (October 19, 2015) – Today, premium men’s undergarment brand Tommy John launches the lightest men’s underwear ever created, aptly called Air.
On the heels of their recently launched viral film campaign “The Big Adjustment”, Tommy John is debuting this collection of underwear and undershirts made from some of the most advanced fabric technology in the world.
The full release is below, but I was fortunate enough to have a dialog with Tommy John founder Tom Patterson to learn more about the new line and have recapped everything I learned below.
If you have any specific questions about the Air line, post them in the Comments section below and I’ll be happy to answer them.
Have I tried them?
Yup
What do I think about them?
Well, you’ll have to wait until I write an official review on them, but they ARE the lightest-weight undershirts and underwear I’ve ever worn.
Tommy John puts out a quality product, so if you’re a fan of the brand, you won’t be disappointed.

besides being “lightweight” and very expensive, what are the advantages and significant differences with the current product line?
hey tom, good to hear from you buddy and thanks for your question.
well, the tommy john line is basically broken down into the following categories:
– light (“air” – 77% Nylon Mesh, 23% Spandex – ~60gsm)
– soft (“second skin” – 90% micromodal, 10% spandex)
– cool (“cool cotton” – 86% pima cotton, 14% spandex)
compared to their existing lines, i’d say “air” is trying to tackle the super-lightweight, fast drying, business traveler segment. whereas the other lines mostly focus on absorption & comfort.
with a stated drying time of around 4 hours, it allows frequent longer-trip business travelers to not only take less underwear & undershirts with them, but take up less space in their luggage too.
as with their other lines, tommy john addresses the higher-end consumer market segment and is likely looking to lead the pack against competitors such as hanro, zimmerli, naked, and any other underbrand™ in that price range.
imo, you’ll have to decide for yourself whether or not the price/value is there for you personally.
myself, i’m not a huge fan of full/mostly wicking underwear & undershirts for my dailywear purposes, but tommy john does make a very nice product if that’s the type of product you’re looking for.
if these items are too far outside your budget or rational spending justification, there are other lightweight undershirt and underwear options to look at (:
