Funkybod Muscle Enhancing Padded Undershirt

Call me strange, but I get really excited when I come across or learn about new undershirt products. Suffice it to say, I was near ecstatic when I happened onto the Funkybod Muscle Enhancing padded undershirt recently!

PSA: Please read the comments. Many people are ordering and not getting their orders.

Note: Lots of folks are wondering what I think of Funkybod. Check out the information at the bottom of this article!

I was excited mostly because I’ve had a handful of readers looking for a padded undershirt (that will make them look bigger), like this guy who wrote me back in November:

Hey Tug,

I saw an article a few months back about these patented undershirts and was curious to know if you had seen any updates on this.

I’m an already-skinny guy who’s had surgery in the recent past, and I’ve ended up losing quite a bit of weight.

Rather than get more looks on the street like I’ve broken out of a labor camp, I was looking shirts like this up.

Any ideas?

I also received an email not too long ago who was trying to get in contact with Greg Cross, a guy who used to put together some home-made padded undershirts about 4 years ago.

The problem was there were no other folks making padded undershirts and Greg Cross was nowhere to be found. Funkybod to the rescue!

The $75 price tag is pretty steep, but it’s comparable in price to some higher-end compression/slimming undershirts.

Seems like a reasonable price to pay for a product like this, especially considering you probably will likely purchase one or two and just wear them on the occasions where you want to look a little beefier.

Maybe I’ll be able to get my hands on one of these puppies in the not-too-distant future and I can let everyone know what I think.

10/18/13 – Update on Funkybod Undershirts

Readers are writing in wondering what I think of Funkybod:

Hey Tug!

I need help with the following:

Is the Funkybod shirt worth the money?

My Response

Thanks for stopping by my site and for sending in your question!

I will say that being “worth the money” is highly subjective. However, the Funkybod padded undershirt does exactly what it says it does.

I mentioned some of that in this article about undershirts with pectoral pads.

I have a black one.  While I personally need it to look bigger, I can say that the shirt is:

  • Comfortable
  • Looks to be pretty decent quality
  • Fairly lightweight
  • Does provide the illusion of additional bulk/muscles when I wear it.

Note the stuff about the sleeve length in the above article which limits you to wearing longer sleeved shirts.

If you’re looking for a decent padded undershirt to make you look bigger, I think you’d be pretty happy with Funkybod.

A follow-up Question

Are the shirts cut small?

I’m concerned with the arms, I don’t want them to slide up while I’m wearing it.

Are they snug enough if I need a large undershirt?

My Response

So I just re-tried on my Funkybod padded undershirt to refresh my memory of the fit.

Here’s what I noticed:

Form Fit

My medium-sized Funkybod is form-fitting everywhere, including the arm.

Sleeve Fit

I pulled the sleeve up my forearm until I felt it was close enough fitting that it would not slip around. At that point, my forearm measures 9.5″ around.

That’s a size medium, so a small would be tighter. Therefore, if your biceps are larger than around 9″ around, the Funkybod undershirt sleeve should fit ok and not move around

Fit / Feel

The shirt fits well, but has slight itchiness to it. Nothing that would keep me from buying it if I needed something like it and that itchiness may very well go away after a few washes

Length

It’s a little on the short side, so it doesn’t have a lot of length to tuck in like a typical undershirt. Though, that could be by design too based on how people would wear it.

I hope that additional information helps!

  1. I find it odd how there are so many bad reviews on funkybod. Me and three friends each brought a shirt individually where the quolity was fine for each shirt, and the customer servis was good too. One thing i would advise check the size chart on the website first as if wouldn’t have done this my shirt would have been too tight.

    • heya kai — if you read the comments, most of the complaints are related to people not getting their orders, and no response from funkybod customer service after repeated attempts.

not really sure why you’ve come here to simply dismiss their comments & complaints — as if it didn’t happen to them. just because you and your friends may have a good experience with funkybod recently, doesn’t negate the issues these people had when they reported them.

also not sure why you find it “odd”. that seems like a strange word to use. why would it be odd that some people had some issues a few years ago with funkybod? maybe the folks at funkybod just didn’t care about customer service a few years back (why else would they never respond to customer’s email — there is absolutely no excuse for that). maybe they have gotten their shit together, and now offering something somewhat resembling actual customer service.

i don’t know, but i find it odd that you’ve come here to dismiss their complaints.

    • heya richard, good to hear from you buddy.

you know, i don’t work for funkybod, and i haven’t heard from them for years, so i can’t be of any help — sorry.

you can find their email address and their phone number on their website.

      best of luck :(

      • Me Too!!!! This is a scam. Funkybod website is active, and taking orders.

I ordered and paid for a shirt over 2 months ago, and another one a month ago. I immediately received a confirmation email receipt thanking me for the purchase on both. It also said a tracking number would be sent WRONG. They took my money and sent nothing. No tracking number, no shirts. NOTHING!! I sent multiple messages on their websites “contact us” portal, I also sent 6 emails to Funkybod.

Guess what happened???….. not a damn thing. No response. I’m trying to find a ‘better business bureau’ in the United Kingdom to shut down their website which is actively taking orders and taking payments/taking money but NOT shipping the product. I’m so pissed off. It’s one thing if they closed, but it’s criminal to continue they website taking payment from people.

Please, everyone, do what you can to contact someone in the UK to help me shut down their site. THEIVES stealing people’s money!! I’m pissed!….

Richard, you won’t receive it man, sorry. It’s been over 2 MONTHS for me and no reply. They won’t even write me back.

Tug….any ideas to contact UK version of better business bureau?

      • Hey dude, I ordered a xL black normal and black xl v neck on March 25th.
I just got both in a package yesterday (April 10th). And I live in America (Florida)

So there warehouse they’re being dispensed from is still active. Still shady that they haven’t been active since around 2016 lol. Hope you get your package.

      • Richard, glad to hear you got your order. I was disappointed after the first one didn’t come but I was mad on the second one. The worst part is there is no one to contact. No way to get a refund. Bad business. …well how do you like yours?

      • heya dustin, so sorry to hear you’ve had that experience with funkybod undershirts.

i don’t know where to file business complaints for uk companies, but i will see if i can find the email address of the owner and point him to the comments here.

sounds like they are still operating per richard’s comments, but there’s absolutely no excuse for you to have to go through what you have.

if i were you, i would file a chargeback against the company for both orders, if you haven’t already done so.

      • Hey man, i was looking at this blog and was reading your concern and it looked very similar to my own problem with funkybod.

I just want to say that it was not fake, i just receive my package via usps after like around 20 days waiting for an answer from the company.

Hope by this time you have receive yours too!

    • Richard,
When your shipment arrived, was is USPS, UPS, FedEx? And, did they ever send you a tracking number? All I ever got was an email receipt thanking me for the purchase.

      Reply
      • Hey, that confirmation code they gave you isn’t a tracking code for UPS/FedEx (trust me I tried). It’s just an internal way of them keeping organized. (Unfortunately not in your case)

I was getting worried too, because I sent them asking about my package four times. With never any response.

Okay so I measured my chest before I got it to ensure a good fit. (Xl) I’m 6’1 235lbs. I wanted to see how it looked on me. It will make you look buff. Here’s the caveot. It’s very itchy for some reason. And the “muscles” you can tell are pads. You can see the outline of them through thin clothing. Shirt kind of rides up a little which is akward because you have to adjust your pecs. But I’m having fun with it lol.

      • Hey Dustin,

I can confirm that they regularly scam their customers because they scammed me too. I have read over a dozen comments with other customers reporting the same scam where they never received their order and customer support never answered their emails.

I ordered 2 large V-Necks and waited over 2 months and never received anything. I then relentlessly emailed and phoned probably about 20 times over the course of the next 18 months and absolutely nothing.

Here’s what I did and it worked: I went onto their Facebook page and gave them the worst possible rating and then copied and pasted my “WARNING! SCAM” review on every single comment box available on all their posts and photos.

Guess what? They sent me my shirts!!

But wait for it… they first demanded that I remove my scam comments as a condition of them sending my shirts!!! I said no way, nothing will happen until I see my order! Its been nearly 2 years!

To be honest when they arrived, they were poorly made, obvious as hell that you’re wearing a body suit, itchy to wear and hot as hell (instant sweat machine), and completely destroyed after the first wash (in cold water, no tumble dry).

All the padding got scrunched up and moved around in big clumps, so they’re now in the bin. No care instructions of any kind and no support at all, so as far as I’m concerned, still one big fat scam.

        Hope that helps mate.

      • thanks for sharing all those details sam. sorry you had to go through all that.

i’m going to put a psa at the top of the article making sure people read through the comments first.

    • I ordered mine on 15th July been out for delivery and they sent me a notification saying delivered but what is funny is they delivered it two the absolutely wrong address.

I emailed them twice and no response well if mine don’t come in a week or so I’m contacting my bank and getting my money refunded.

people sit bye years and paying for well that’s not me if don’t come in 2 weeks I’ll contact my bank and I’ll get my money from my bank and my bank will get there money from them.

that’s how good my bank is they can rip people off well know they have messed with the wrong person.

I’m not a person that gives up or forgets when I’m pissed they will have to be forced to give money back to my bank.

    • heya jordan, thanks for stopping by and mentioning your site.

i normally don’t like promotional comments of any kind.

but since i would likely mention within the article that aussie’s could conveniently buy funkybod from an australian online retailer (you), i think it’s fine to keep your comment published (:

send me an email about your height increasing insoles and shoes, cause i think that would be a fun thing to write about some time soon!

  4. I bought products both from funkybod and clotheswithmuscles. Best things ever. I like cwm more because they have products for the lower body too. Anyway, both are best

    • heya eirik — can you send pictures of both your funkybod and cwm tops? i’d love to see the difference side by side.

or just send separate photos and i can put them side by side.

      thanks (:

  5. This undershirt is fantastic and I do not regret buying it at all. The difference though is not subtle ( I wore a coat and many layers for a month telling everyone I was working out before I put the shirt on). then, the outcome was impressively realistic, one must remember though to wear somewhat thick clothes and LONG SLEEVE jumpers. I wear it every day, not even my family know!

  6. Hi just wondering if those guys (FunkyBod) are still in business and wether they actually have the items in stock as opposed to back ordering. thanks in advance

    Reply
    • heya jayce — off hand i couldn’t tell you exactly whether or not funkybod is still in business or if they have items in stock, but in looking at their new website, it would appear so. i don’t see any messages of items being out of stock when going to select different sizes or colors.

have you attempted to purchase from them recently? have you been to their site? let me know because i can send an email to one of the owners and find out more.

  7. I was one of the suckers who bought this when it was initially priced at $50. I paid the currency conversion fees and hefty shipping to the U.S., I just wanted to see what it was like. Unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment. I would strongly advise readers to think twice about buying this product.

First, think think think! Think about what you are buying. The most obvious question is: Will people who see you without this shirt see you with this shirt? Ask yourself that question, and if so, then those people are bound to notice the odd change in your appearance and the whole point of the undershirt becomes, well, pointless. Unless you wear this shirt EVERY time you see these people and never take your shirt off, you are bound to prompt an awkward question eventually: “Gee, you know, so did you gain 20 pounds of muscle last night?”

Second, and now I assume that you passed the first question and are ONLY planning on wearing this shirt to one-time events to impress people who rarely see you (which is again the only reason to wear this shirt or buy it in the first place), ask yourself how transparent the material is on the outershirt that you will be wearing overtop this undershirt. Unless your outershirt is extremely thick or dark colored, there will inevitably be one (it only takes one!) lighting situation in which people will be able to see through your outer shirt for a second. They might not be able to see the actual stiching of the pads, but they will be able to see the odd, non-skin-looking unevenness of the padding (like cotton bunches/dimples/snags that inevitably occur in real life). The human eye is extremely perceptive. I could see small flaws just swaying the shirt around in my bedroom while walking back and forth in front of the mirror, and I knew instantly that it would not stand the test of real sunlight, thousands of different light angles, or hours of moving around/sweating/stretching.

Lastly, I add that the quality of the stiching of the pads seems poor. My shirt ripped in two small spots on the second wear, and it was unusable after the fourth wash. Overall, I was constantly mentally afraid of the undershirt and its flaws being visible through my overshirt. I think the idea is great, but it’s going to take someone who develops a truly skin-like padded shirt (made of silk or spandex or something) so that it perfectly suctions to the skin. As a cotton undershirt, well, cotton just cannot look like skin under the pressure of hours of real life movement and lighting.

Based on my experience, this “Funkybod Muscle Enhancing Undershirt” is a novelty that sounds great in concept but doesn’t actually work in real life. I had $70 to waste on a gamble, but that $70 is now in some landfill. Just my honest review!
