Ask Tug: Undershirts for Shorter Men

Hi:

I just came across your blog and thought I would pick your brain regarding the following: I am 5.4 tall, with a 31 waist and a 38 chest/shoulders. I have been having trouble finding undershirts which are short enough such that they do not extend too far below my waistband. Overall, I have been very happy with the medium CIN-2 pima cotton crewneck but even they are a little fuller and longer at the bottom than I would like. Do you have any suggestions?
thanks so much

Hi wc,

Thanks for your email and stopping by the site.

Out of all the undershirts I’ve tried recently, the shortest shirts run approximately 28.5” (laying flat) from top of shoulder to bottom. Those undershirts include Jockey (3D innovation), Calvin Klein, the 100% Coolmax undershirt from CoolClothingUSA, and 2xist (which is 29” long). Out of all those undershirts, the Calvin Klein I referred to above, was their “flexible fit” version so it has a nice stretch to it and fit a little better than the other box cut undershirts listed above. Unfortunately, due to the Dow XLA/cotton fabric blend, I found the Calvin Klein undershirt to be a little warmer to wear than other undershirts.

Another option you may want to consider is to try more “body-conscious fit” (aka. form fit) undershirts. Some are made out of a cotton/spandex blend, some out of ribbed cotton, and are slightly narrower in the waist than in the torso. Here’s a link to some stretch undershirts at freshpair.com.

There is one other possible alternative. There is a store located in Beverly Hills, California called Jimmy Au’s For Men 5’8” and Under, a clothing store dedicated to offering clothing for shorter men. They might stock a special selection of shorter undershirts. If they don’t have anything, they may be able to offer some suggestions.

I hope the above information helps you locate something that works for your particular body style.

Let me know if you find anything that you really like!
